Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Nanking.
Etymology: < Nanking (also transliterated Nanjing ), the name of the capital city of Jiangsu province in south-east China. Compare nankeen n.The place name is attested, spelt Nankin, from the late 17th cent., and spelt Nanking from the 19th cent.
In full Nanking cherry. A hardy early-flowering species of cherry, Prunus tomentosa, native to temperate East Asia and cultivated elsewhere for its ornamental white or pink-tinged flowers and sweet juicy red fruit.
