单词 newfangle
释义

newfangleadj.n.

Brit. /ˈnjuːfaŋɡ(ə)l/, /ˌnjuːˈfaŋɡ(ə)l/, U.S. /ˈn(j)uˌfæŋɡ(ə)l/, /ˌn(j)uˈfæŋɡ(ə)l/, Scottish English /ˌnjuˈfaŋ(ɡ)(ə)l/
Forms: Middle English neufangel, Middle English newe faggil (transmission error), Middle English newefangel, Middle English newefangil, Middle English newefangyl, Middle English newefongel, Middle English newe fongen (probably transmission error), Middle English newefongul, Middle English newfangel, Middle English newfanggell, Middle English newfangill, Middle English newfangille, Middle English newfangul, Middle English newfangylle, Middle English–1500s newefangle, Middle English–1500s newfangil, Middle English–1500s newfangill, Middle English– newfangle; also Scottish pre-1700 newfangill.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: new adj., -le suffix 1.
Etymology: < new adj. + an otherwise unattested adjective (probably with the sense ‘inclined to take’) < the base of fang v.1 + -le suffix 1.Middle Dutch nieuvingel , nieuvingelheit has a different stem vowel, and so is difficult to relate directly to the English word. Perhaps compare also Faroese fangla to try to catch hold of (compare -le suffix 3). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (niūfæ·ŋg'l) /njuːˈfæŋɡ(ə)l/.
Now colloquial and regional (chiefly Scottish).
A. adj.
1. = newfangled adj. 1. Obsolete. In later Scottish use sometimes also: caught up in a new experience (as distinct from having a tendency to be so caught up).
