Etymology: < post-classical Latin nobilitation-, nobilitatio ennoblement (a1457 in a British source; 1361 in a British source in sense ‘granting of franchise’; perhaps 12th cent. in a spiritual sense) < classical Latin nōbilitāt- , past participial stem of nōbilitāre nobilitate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French nobilitation action of ennobling (1342). Compare earlier nobilitate v., nobilitating n.
