Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Pali lexical item, and partly modelled on a Sanskrit lexical item. Etymons: noble adj., truth n. and adv.
Etymology: < noble adj. + truth n. and adv., after Pali ariya-sacca, Sanskrit ārya-satya, lit. ‘truth of the Aryas’ < ārya noble one (compare Aryan adj. and n.) + satya satya n.
Each of the four fundamental tenets of Buddhism ( the four Noble Truths), which summarize the Buddhist philosophy of life (see quot. 1990).
