单词 | odd fellow |
释义 | Odd Fellown. A member of a mason-like society, fraternity, or order organized under this name and usually having social or benevolent purposes (originally esp. that of helping members in need). Now: spec. a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Frequently in plural. The name ‘Odd Fellows’ appears to have been originally assumed by local social clubs formed in various parts of England during the 18th cent. They often had rites of initiation, hierarchical ‘degrees’ of dignity and honour, passwords, and secret ceremonies supposed to imitate those of Freemasonry. Various associations of these clubs were formed from time to time for purposes of mutual recognition. The most important of these, the ‘Independent Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity’, formed about 1813, grew into an organization with many local branches or ‘lodges’ throughout the world, chiefly in Great Britain and the Commonwealth. An American lodge, founded in Baltimore in 1819, grew to become a distinct international association in North America and Europe, originally in connection with the Manchester Union but from 1842 separate from it.
