Etymology: < classical Latin obductiōn-, obductiō the action of covering or enveloping < obduct- , past participial stem of obdūcere obduce v. + -iō -ion suffix1.In quot. 1610 at sense 2 translating post-classical Latin obductio affliction (Vulgate), in turn rendering Hellenistic Greek ἐπαγωγή (Septuagint), glossed by Liddell & Scott's Greek-Eng. Lexicon (ed. 9, 1940) in this context as ‘leading away into captivity, captivity,..generally, distress, misery’. Compare Middle French obduction (in phrase en temps de..obduction ) affliction (15th cent.). With sense 3 compare subduction n. 6.
