Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek Ὀϕιανοί.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek Ὀϕιανοί (plural) serpent-worshippers (Clement of Alexandria), members of an early Gnostic sect which worshipped the serpent (Origen) < ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent (see ophio- comb. form) + -ανος -an suffix. Compare earlier Ophite n.2
