释义

ophio-comb. form

Forms: 1600s 1800s ophido- (irregular), 1600s– ophio-.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ὀϕιο-, ὄϕις.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ὀϕιο-, combining form (in e.g. ὀϕιογενής (see ophiogenes n.), ὀϕιομάχος ophiomach n. ) of ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent ( < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit ahi , Avestan aži ); compare -o- connective. For the variant ophido- , see discussion s.v. Ophidia n. Attested earliest in borrowings ultimately from Greek, first in a small number of loans immediately from classical Latin and post-classical Latin in the second half of the 16th cent. (ophiophagus n., Ophiuchus n., Ophioglossum n.), in the 17th and 18th centuries in a larger number of borrowings and adaptations of Latin and Greek words (ophiomach n. , ophiophagous adj., ophiomancy n., and (partly < French) ophiogenes n.), and in the 19th and 20th centuries in sporadic loans and adaptations of scientific Latin terminology (Ophiopogon n., ophiocephaloid adj.). Formations in English are found from the late 17th cent., earliest in ophiomorphite n., ophiomorphous adj., and are increasingly numerous from the end of the 18th cent., in later use especially in scientific and technical registers. Usually compounded with elements ultimately of Greek origin. Compare classical Latin and scientific Latin ophio-, French ophio- (also ophido-; formations in which are found from the 18th cent.), Italian ofio- (formations in which are found from at least the 19th cent.), German ophio-.
