Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian oratorio.
Etymology: < Italian oratorio pulpit (1598 in Florio; earlier in sense ‘oratory’; compare oratory n.1), narrative musical work (1640) < post-classical Latin oratorium oratory n.1 In sense 2, named from the kind of musical services held in the church of the Oratory of St Philip Neri in Rome (Congregazione dell'Oratorio ) in the latter half of the 16th cent. (see note at oratory n.1 4b, and compare New Grove Dict. Music (2001) at cited word); compare quot. c1660 at oratory n.1 4b and the following:1670 S. Wilson Lassels's Voy. Italy (new ed.) ii. 227 The house of these good Priests [of S. Philip Neri] deserues also to be seen..for the great Oratoryes sake, where there is euery Sunday and Holyday in winter at night, the best Musick in the world.
