Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: other adj., self n.
Etymology: < other adj. + self n., after German das Andre seiner selbst (G. W. F. Hegel Wissenschaft der Logik I. (1812) 51).
Metaphysics. Now rare.
That which is part of the self, but is external to the consciousness of the thinking subject. Usually in idealist thought.

1856 Biblical Repertory Apr. 372 Michelet goes on to say, ‘God is the only true personal being;’ and further, ‘as God is eternal personality, so he eternally produces his other-self [Ger. das Andere seiner], viz., nature, in order to come to self-consciousness.’
