Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French origan; Latin orīganum.
Etymology: < Middle French, French origan (13th cent. in Old French), Middle French auriganne (1359), origane (15th cent.) and its etymon classical Latin orīganum origanum n. Compare earlier organ n.2, origanum n., and also organum n.2
Now rare or historical.
Any plant of the genus Origanum; esp. wild marjoram or oregano, O. vulgare. In early use also: †wild thyme or pennyroyal (obsolete).
