Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably from a proper name. Etymon: proper name Orinoco.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably < the name of the Orinoco river in northern South America, which was first visited by Columbus in 1498 and further explored by Sir Walter Raleigh (who popularized tobacco-smoking in England) in 1595.The name was first applied in English to tobacco planted in Jamestown, Virginia by John Rolfe in 1612 from Nicotiana tabacum seed obtained from Latin America. Compare:1839 ‘J. Fume’ Paper on Tobacco 118 (note) Orinoco was the name given by the planters to one of the species of tobacco chiefly cultivated in Virginia,—probably from its having been originally obtained from that part of Spanish America which lies near the mouth of the river of that name. Spanish Orinoco was in repute so early as 1622. N.E.D. (1903) enters this under oronoco, oronooko and gives the pronunciation as (ōəronōu·ko, -nū·ko) /ɔərəʊˈnəʊkəʊ/, /-ˈnuːkəʊ/.
More fully Orinoco tobacco. A type of tobacco produced by flue-curing; (also) a cultivar of Nicotiana tabacum used to produce such tobacco.
