单词 | paddle wheel |
释义 | paddle wheeln. 1. A large (typically steam-driven) wheel with paddles or boards fitted around its circumference, situated at the stern or on each side of a ship, and propelling it by rotation about a horizontal axis that pushes the lower paddle-boards backward through the water. Cf. paddle n.1 3.In quot. 1685, conceived of as a wheel with paddle-like spokes or oars, rather than boards. Theorists and inventors during the 18th cent. seem to have avoided the term, writing mainly of the ‘wheel’, ‘waterwheel’, ‘rowing-wheel’, ‘revolving oars’, etc.; when boards were introduced, the term was further felt to be inappropriate, but came in gradually after 1815.
