1938 Geogr. Rev. 28 58 Hamberg..thinks that the pals are formed by a local upheaval..in places that originally were slightly raised above the level of the bog owing to the absence of snow cover.

1940 Science 31 May 523/2 Von Lozinski has gone so far as to suggest that the earth mounds of Arkansas are the remnants of frost-heaved earth mounds, ‘palsen’ or ‘busen’.
