Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: over- prefix, striking n.
Etymology: < over- prefix + striking n.; in sense 1 after overstrike v. (compare sense 3a s.v.). With sense 2 compare later overstrike v. 3b.
1. Numismatics. The action of superimposing a new design over the original design on a coin; (also) a new design superimposed in this way. Cf. overstrike v. 3a.

1880 A. J. Hipkins in G. Grove Dict. Music II. 646/2 [Pape] repeated the old idea..of an overstriking action—that is, the hammers descending upon the strings.
1995 Fortepianos in pianotech (Electronic mailing list) 5 Feb. It reminded me of our Belt fortepiano which was evidently built to have overstriking hammers.
