Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pact; Latin pactum.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French pact (1352–6; 1304–5 in Old French as pat , plural pas ), Middle French, French pacte (1461), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin pactum agreement, covenant, use as noun of neuter singular of pactus , past participle of paciscere to arrange by negotiation, agree < pacere to agree ( < an Indo-European base also seen (in various forms) in classical Latin pāx peace (see peace n.), pangere to fix, fasten (see page n.2), ancient Greek πηγνύναι to fix, make solid: see pectic adj.) + -sc- (compare -ish suffix2). Compare Italian patto (13th cent.; compare patt n.), Catalan pacte (c1400), Spanish pacto (late 14th cent.); also Middle High German pact- (in a compound; German Pakt).
A formal agreement or covenant between individuals or parties; a treaty, an alliance. Also with with.nude, suicide, Warsaw pact, etc.: see the first element.
