Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: paunce n., -let suffix.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < paunce n. in sense ‘something which protects’ + -let suffix, although the semantic development seems somewhat remote. Compare also planch n. 3.
Now historical.
A kind of horseshoe used to protect the heel. Cf. planch n. 3.
