Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin pandūra , -iform comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin pandūra lute (see pandoura n.) + -iform comb. form. Compare scientific Latin panduræformis (1751), panduriformis (1764), and French panduriforme (1802 or earlier).For the application of post-classical Latin pandura to other stringed instruments than the lute, including fiddles, see pandoura n. For the form with medial æ see the etymological note at -form comb. form2.
Chiefly Botany.
Esp. of a leaf: rounded at both ends and narrowed in the middle; fiddle-shaped.
