Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew pārōḵeṯ.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew pārōḵeṯ (plural pārōḵōṯ , pārōḵīyōṯ ), literally ‘that which shuts off’ (in biblical Hebrew in sense ‘curtain before the Most Holy Place in the Tabernacle, and later in the Temple’ (Exodus 26:31, etc.), usually translated ‘veil’: compare veil n.1 4a(a); cognate with Aramaic pārĕgud), use as noun of present participle of an otherwise unattested root cognate with Akkadian parāku to go across, bar. Compare Akkadian parakku shrine.The Hebrew word is found in English context in its biblical sense from the 17th cent. onwards.
