Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin participātor.
Etymology: < classical Latin participātor person who takes part (2nd cent. a.d., as cited in a 6th-cent. author), in post-classical Latin also person who shares out or allots (1270 in a British source) < participāt- , past participial stem of participāre participate v. + -or -or suffix. Compare Middle French participeur (1530). Compare participant n., partiary n.In earlier Latin the usual noun was particeps (see particeps criminis n.); in French it is participant (see participant n.).
A person who participates in something; a partaker, a sharer; a participant.
