Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: pass v.
Etymology: < pass v.Attested in a few formations from the late 16th and early 17th centuries (apparently earliest in pass-praise ). By contrast, the corresponding forms in Romance languages are very productive; compare French passe- (already in Old French), combining form of passer pass v. (which forms compounds with adjectives and adverbs as well as with nouns, and in various senses of the verb); Italian passa- , combining form of passare pass v.; Spanish pasa- , combining form of pasar pass v. French passe- and Italian passa- are attested in several borrowings from the late 15th cent. onwards (earliest in passport n.1), but are not productive in English.
Obsolete.
Forming compounds (chiefly ad hoc formations) with nouns, with the sense ‘that surpasses or exceeds ——’.
