Origin: Probably a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian passata.
Etymology: Probably < Italian passata (1353 in sense ‘passing’, late 16th cent. in sense 1; < passare pass v. + -ata -ade suffix), with remodelling of the ending after -ado suffix. Compare also Spanish pasada (a1250 in sense ‘passing’), French passade passade n.
1. Fencing. A forward thrust with the foil, the rear foot being advanced at the same time.
