Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French patisserie.
Etymology: < Middle French, French †patisserie, pâtisserie pastries collectively (1328 as †pastiserie ), shop where pastries are made and sold (1333), pastry cooking (1803), piece of pastry (1823) < an unattested Old French derivative of post-classical Latin pasticium (see patisser n.) + -erie -ery suffix. Compare Old Occitan pastisairia (Occitan pastissariá), Catalan pastisseria (1460).In β. forms apparently after patisser n. (see forms and etymological note at that entry).
1. Originally Scottish. In singular and (in recent use) plural. Articles of food made by a pastry-cook; pastries collectively; (occasionally) pastry cooking.
