Etymology: < post-classical Latin accension-, accensio action of kindling (Vetus Latina), sexual arousal (5th cent.), illumination of the mind (6th cent.), (in medical context) inflammation (13th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin accens- , past participial stem of accendere accend v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French accension beginning of an illness (a1365 in an isolated attestation), Portuguese acensão combustion, ignition (1671 as †accensão).
Now rare exc. historical.
The action of catching fire or setting something on fire; the state of being on fire; combustion; ignition; Medicine fermentation producing heat, heating or overheating of the blood or other ‘humour’ (= ebullition n. 1b).
