Etymology: < classical Latin perīclitāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of perīclitārī to be in danger, to expose to danger, to test < perīculum , perīclum trial, risk, danger (see peril n.). Compare Middle French, French péricliter to be shipwrecked, perish at sea (early 14th cent. in Old French), to expose to danger (1611 in Cotgrave), to be in danger (1649).
