Etymology: < peri- prefix + diastole n., after French péridiastole (A.-N. Gendrin Leçons sur les maladies du coeur (1841–2) I. 31). Compare earlier perisystole n.With peridiastolic adj. at Derivatives compare presystolic adj., perisystolic adj. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pe:ridəiˌæ·stŏli) /ˌpɛrɪdaɪˈæstəliː/.
Physiology. Obsolete.
The short interval of time between the diastole of the heartbeat and the following systole. Cf. perisystole n. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
