Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French acceptable.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French acceptable (French acceptable ) agreeable (12th cent. in Old French), that may be accepted (13th cent.) < post-classical Latin acceptabilis probable, credible (late 2nd cent. in Tertullian), pleasing, agreeable, welcome (Vetus Latina, Vulgate) < classical Latin acceptāre accept v. + -bilis -ble suffix. In earlier use often stressed on the first syllable. N.E.D. (1884) notes the persistence of this stress pattern regularly in verse until the late 19th cent.: ‘and so in all poets to the present day’.
