Etymology: < scientific Latin phlegmasia caerulea dolens (R. Grégoire in Presse médicale (1938) 3 Sept. 1313/1, as phlegmatia caerulea dolens ) < post-classical Latin phlegmasia phlegmasia n. + classical Latin caerulea , feminine singular of caeruleus dark blue (see cerulean adj.) + dolēns , present participle of dolēre to suffer pain (see dole v.2). Compare earlier phlegmasia alba dolens n.
Medicine.
Pain, swelling, cyanosis, and usually gangrene of a limb, caused by total or near-total venous occlusion, usually of the iliofemoral veins.
