Etymology: < French picrate (J. Dumas 1836, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 63 271) < picr- (in picrique picric adj.) + -ate -ate suffix4.
Chemistry.
A salt or other derivative of picric acid.Picrates formed by combination with a metal are often explosive. Those formed by combination with an organic compound are often charge-transfer complexes which may be used to identify the organic compound concerned.

1997 Re: Aluminum Questions in rec.pyrotechnics (Usenet newsgroup) 6 July Someone explained to me that once a metal has been oxidized..it no longer acts as a reducing agent. However, if it is fulminated or picrated, the metal is not oxidized, but still bonded to the oxidizer.
