Etymology: < phospho- comb. form + lipase n., after German Phospholipase (H. Udagawa in Jrnl. Biochem. ( (Tokyo) ) 22 (1935) 324).
Biochemistry.
Any of a group of enzymes which bring about the hydrolysis of ester bonds in phospholipids; (in early use esp.) an enzyme which hydrolyses phosphatidylcholine (lecithin).Formerly also called lecithinase.
