单词 pigle
释义

piglen.

Forms: Middle English pigill, Middle English pygele, Middle English pygle, Middle English pygyl, Middle English–1500s pigil, Middle English–1500s pigle, 1500s pygyll.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from French. Perhaps a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pigle, picle; Latin pigla.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < either Anglo-Norman pigle (see quot. c1300 at sense 1; also as picle, pugle, pigule) or post-classical Latin pigla, pigula (a1250, 14th cent. respectively in British sources), both cited alongside the English word in herbals and evidently related, although it is possible that the relative dates of first attestation may give a misleading impression of the word's transmission; further etymology unknown. With sense 2 compare paigle n., although the nature of any relationship is unclear.
Obsolete.
1. Either of two kinds of stitchwort used medicinally, the greater stitchwort, Stellaria holostea, and (in full less pigle) the lesser stitchwort, S. graminea.
