Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: photo- comb. form, -tropism comb. form.
Etymology: < photo- comb. form + -tropism comb. form; in sense 1 probably after phototropic adj.; compare also French phototropisme (1900 or earlier), German Phototropismus (1903 or earlier), and earlier phototropy n., heliotropism n. With sense 2 compare earlier phototropy n.
1. Chiefly Biology. The directional bending or growth of a plant or sessile animal in response to light; (also, Zoology) the directional movement of a motile animal in response to light (= phototaxis n.); an instance of either of these responses. Also figurative.
