Forms: 1700s– pillas, 1800s pilez, 1800s– pellas, 1800s– pelles, 1800s– pillez, 1800s– pillis, 1800s– pillus. N.E.D.(1906) also records a form peallas.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: pillotes n.
Etymology: Probably shortened < pillotes n., although this is poorly attested and has a different localization. Compare also pill v.1, pilcorn n.
English regional (Cornwall). Now historical.
Naked oats, Avena nuda. Also (rare): naked barley.
