Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pitch n.1, stone n.
Etymology: < pitch n.1 + stone n. Compare post-classical Latin lapis piceus (1729 or earlier), German Pechstein (1759; earlier in sense ‘lump of pitch’ (1493)).
1. Geology. A dull vitreous rock resembling hardened pitch, formed by partial hydration of obsidian.
