Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pipidae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pipidae, family name ( W. Swainson Nat. Hist. Fishes, Amphibians, & Reptiles (1839) II. 88) < Pipa , genus name (see pipa n.1) + -idae (see -id suffix3).
