Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pleuracanthus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pleuracanthus, genus name ( L. Agassiz Recherches sur poissons fossiles (1837) III. 68) < ancient Greek πλευρά side (see pleura n.) + ἄκανθα spine, thorn (see acanthus n.). With use as adjective compare pleuracanthoid adj.; with use as noun compare pleuracanthoid n. and slightly later pleuracanthid n.
Palaeontology.

Designating or relating to shark-like fishes of the order Xenacanthiformes (formerly Pleuracanthodii), known from fossil remains from the Devonian to the Triassic periods and typically having a long spine behind the skull bordered by two rows of small denticles, an elongated dorsal fin, and a diphycercal tail.
