Etymology: < post-classical Latin plebania parish (13th cent.) < plebanus (see pleban n.) + -ia -ia suffix1. 1851 Brechin Advertiser 17 June 4/2 In the term Plebania, used in the ancient records, we have a view of the mother or original baptismal church, seated among its subordinate churches or chapels in a wide district, and conferring an authority somewhat less than that of bishop on its priest or parson, over the whole.
