Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πολυτόκος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πολυτόκος bearing more than one child, producing numerous offspring, prolific ( < πολυ- poly- comb. form + τόκος offspring, childbirth: see toco- comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier polytoky n. and also monotocous adj.
1. Botany. = polycarpic adj. 1. Obsolete. rare.
