Forms: 1800s– Port du Salut, 1900s– Port Salut.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French port-salut.
Etymology: < French port-salut (1873) < Port Salut (also Port-du-Salut), the name of a Trappist monastery in the department of Mayenne, in north-western France, where the cheese was first produced. N.E.D. (1907) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (salü) /pɔr saly/.
A soft pressed cheese with a mild flavour.
