单词 privado
释义

privadon.

Brit. /prᵻˈvɑːdəʊ/, U.S. /prᵻˈvɑˌdoʊ/
Inflections: Plural privados, (now rare) privadoes.
Forms: 1500s–1600s priuado, 1600s– privado.
Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish privado.
Etymology: < Spanish privado (c1200), use as noun of privado (see private adj.1). Compare Portuguese privado (13th cent. in this sense). The sense ‘a private soldier or inferior (non-commissioned) officer’ which appears in a number of dictionaries in the late 19th cent. (see e.g. Cent. Dict. (1890), I. K. Funket al. Standard Dict. Eng. Lang. (1895)) is apparently the result of a misreading (in Harl. MS. 4031 lf. 244) of lantz prisadoes (see lancepesade n.). N.E.D. (1908) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (privā·do) /priˈvɑːdo/.
Now chiefly historical.
An intimate private friend or confidant; spec. the favourite of a ruler.
