Etymology: < classical Latin prōtect-, past participial stem of prōtegere protect v. + -ory suffix1, probably after refectory n., reformatory n., etc. Compare post-classical Latin protectorium protectorship (15th cent.), use as noun of neuter of protectorius (see protectory adj.).
An institution for the care and education of destitute or delinquent children.The word was used in the names of several institutions of this kind founded and run by the Roman Catholic Church in the United States.
