Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French propitiable; Latin propitiābilis.
Etymology: < Middle French propiciable, propitiable merciful (13th cent. in Old French; 1579 in an apparently isolated attestation in sense ‘propitiatory’) and its etymon classical Latin propitiābilis able to be appeased, in post-classical Latin also able to propitiate (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian; < propitiāre propitiate v. + -bilis -ble suffix). Compare Catalan propiciable able to be appeased (15th cent.).
