Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare earlier pad n.2 (although this is later denoting a foot or paw), or patte n. Compare also paw n.1 and the Germanic and Romance forms cited at that entry.
A child's word for: the hand or the forefoot of an animal; a little hand or paw. Now rare.
