单词 provocatory
释义

provocatoryadj.n.

Brit. /prəˈvɒkət(ə)ri/, U.S. /prəˈvɑkəˌtɔri/, /proʊˈvɑkəˌtɔri/
Forms: late Middle English 1600s prouocatorie, 1600s prouocatory, 1700s– provocatory.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin; apparently partly modelled on a French lexical item. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation; apparently partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin prōvocātōrius ; provocate v., -ory suffix2.
Etymology: < classical Latin prōvocātōrius relating to a challenge (2nd cent. a.d.) < prōvocāt- , past participial stem of prōvocāre provoke v. + -ōrius -ory suffix2. In later use probably partly also < provocate v. + -ory suffix2; compare -atory suffix2. In use as noun apparently after French †provocatoire (1611 in Cotgrave as noun (see quot. 1611 at sense B.); 1562 in Middle French as adjective). Compare Italian provocatorio, adjective (1498).
