Etymology: < classical Latin prūrīre to itch (see prurient adj. and n.) + -ation suffix, with inserted -it- , as if derived < an unattested *prūrītāre , frequentative formation < prūrīre (see -itate suffix). Compare later prurition n.
Obsolete. rare.
A continual or recurrent itching; figurative a compelling desire or craving.
