Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pulse n.2, -ometer comb. form.
Etymology: < pulse n.2 + -ometer comb. form. Compare earlier pulsimeter n.R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1858 at sense 1) gives also a Latin form pulsometrum . On the origin of sense 2 compare comment in quot. 1873. Compare also French pulsomètre (dated 1874 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).
1. Medicine. An instrument for measuring the (rate of the) pulse; = pulsimeter n.
