Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pulveratores.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pulveratores (1890 or earlier: see quot.) < classical Latin pulverāt- , past participial stem of pulverāre pulver v. + -orēs , plural of -or -or suffix, after French †pulvérateurs , plural noun (a1788 in Buffon). Compare slightly earlier French pulvérateur (adjective) designating such birds (1770 in Buffon, in oiseaux pulvérateurs (plural)). Compare earlier pulveratrix n. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pɒlvĕreiə·rīz) /pʌlvəreɪˈtɔəriːz/.
Ornithology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
With plural agreement. A former group of birds comprising those which drive dust into the plumage and shake it out as part of feather maintenance, as gallinaceous birds, pigeons, etc. Cf. pulveratrix n.
