Etymology: Blend of the name of G. N. Pyke (1893–1948), British member of Combined Operations, who proposed the use of this material during the Second World War (1939–45) and concrete n.The material was invented in 1943 by H. Mark and W. Hohenstein and further developed by M. Perutz (compare quot. 1948). G. N. Pyke suggested the use of the material in the proposed construction of unsinkable aircraft carriers, after proposals had been made to use ice for that purpose. Pykrete is more durable and melts more slowly than ice on its own.

Ice to which a proportion of wood pulp or sawdust has been added to give it strength as a construction material.

The discovery was made by [Hermann] Mark and [Walter] Hohenstein, working at the Brooklyn Polytechnic. In view of the similarity to concrete and in honour of the originator of the bergship project, the frozen wood pulp was given the code name of pykrete (Pyke's concrete).

1966 New Scientist 3 Feb. 284/3 Just as the Eskimo had learned to stiffen and toughen ice by freezing moss into it, so Pykrete owed its strength to fibres of cellulose that blocked the spread of cracks.

1998 M. Perutz I wish I'd made you Angry Earlier 83 When we fired a rifle bullet into an upright block of pure ice two feet square and one foot thick, the block shattered; in pykrete the bullet made a little crater and was embedded without doing any damage.
