Etymology: < classical Latin Pyrrhōn-, Pyrrhō (ancient Greek Πύρρων), the name of Pyrrho of Elis (c300 b.c.), founder of the first school of Greek sceptic philosophy + -ian suffix, probably after classical Latin pyrrhōnius, adjective and noun. Compare Middle French pyrrhonien, adjective and noun (1546 in Rabelais; French pyrrhonien).In form Pyrrhenian , after adjectives in -enian (compare Origenian adj., etc.). With the form Pyrrhonean compare -ean suffix and classical Latin pyrrhōneus, variant of pyrrhōnius (see above).
