Etymology: < post-classical Latin quadruplication-, quadruplicatio action of multiplying by four (5th cent.), (in legal use) rebutter, rejoinder (c1258, c1290, c1390 in British sources) < classical Latin quadruplicāt- , past participial stem of quadruplicāre quadruplicate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare slightly earlier quadrupling n. With sense 2 compare triplication n. 2.
